A wet sump is an engine lubrication system where the oil supply tank forms an integral part of the crankcase itself. Rather than storing lubricant in a separate external reservoir, the oil pools directly in a stamped steel or cast aluminum pan bolted to the underside of the engine block. This design lets gravity feed oil to the crankshaft bearings, camshaft, and cylinder walls as it splashes and drains from moving components.

The oil pan in a wet sump typically holds 4 to 8 liters depending on engine size and design. A pickup tube submerged near the sump floor draws oil into the gear-driven or belt-driven pump, which pressurizes it through galleries machined into the block and head. As bearings and surfaces shed oil during operation, it falls back into the sump by gravity, creating a circulation loop. This simplicity makes wet sumps the overwhelmingly dominant design in road vehicles, motorcycles, and stationary engines.

Wet sumps perform poorly in two specific scenarios. Under sustained hard cornering or acceleration, the oil sloshes away from the pickup tube, starving the pump and causing bearing failure. This is why high-performance and racing engines often switch to dry sump systems, which use separate tanks and scavenge pumps to guarantee oil delivery regardless of vehicle attitude. Wet sumps also expose the pan to impact damage from road debris and underbody contact, risking catastrophic loss of oil pressure.

Thermal and practical trade-offs

The large surface area of a wet sump pan provides passive cooling as oil circulates through the block, then cools while sitting exposed in the pan. This reduces reliance on oil coolers in moderate-duty applications. However, the same exposed surface means oil temperature climbs faster in severe service, and thicker oil may be needed to maintain film strength at higher temperatures. Drain and filter service is straightforward, as the sump is accessible from below.

The term "wet sump" exists primarily to distinguish this design from "dry sump," which became common in motorsport during the 1960s. The word "wet" refers simply to the presence of a liquid oil reservoir within the engine housing, whereas "dry" implies the sump contains no standing oil. For most automotive technicians and engine builders, wet sump remains the baseline system against which alternatives are measured.
