The cabin skeleton of a motor vehicle; without the frame or subassemblies extending from the front and back and below; without finishes, furnishings, accoutrements. This body is at a stage in the assembly process before such is attached.

A body in white (or BiW) is the welded steel structure of a car or light truck at the moment it leaves the body shop, before any paint, interior trim, glass, or mechanical subassemblies are installed. It consists of the floor pan, door frames, roof panel, pillars, and side walls all joined by spot welds or seam welds into a rigid monocoque shell. At this stage the structure is bare metal, typically unpainted, hence the name. The body in white is essentially the skeleton onto which everything else is bolted or glued.

The BiW stage marks a critical handoff in vehicle assembly. Once the welded structure is complete and dimensionally verified, it moves down the line for paint application, where it enters the electro-coat bath and spray booths. Simultaneously, the empty shell can be fitted with glass, weatherstripping, and electrical harnesses before mechanical systems like the powertrain, suspension, and interior are installed. This modular approach allows parallel work streams and reduces total line time.

Dimensional control and quality

Precision in the body in white determines every component fit downstream. Tolerances on door gaps, roof-to-pillar alignment, and floor flatness are typically held to within 3 to 5 millimeters across the entire structure. Spot weld spacing, nugget diameter, and weld count are specified by engineering; a typical automotive body may contain 4,000 to 6,000 spot welds. Any deviation from these parameters causes dimensional creep that multiplies through assembly. Ultrasonic or laser scanning systems check BiW geometry before it proceeds to paint.

The transition to aluminium structures in recent years has changed BiW processes significantly. Aluminium bodies require different joining methods: resistance spot welding must be tuned to aluminium properties, adhesive bonding is often used alongside welds, and riveting adds another fastening option. Steel bodies remain dominant in volume production, but premium and electric vehicle makers increasingly use aluminium to reduce weight.

The term 'white' is thought to derive from the unpainted, mill-scale appearance of freshly welded steel, though sources vary on its exact origin. In some older British usage it appears in technical literature by the 1970s. Today it is a universal term across automotive manufacturing in English-speaking countries and is increasingly used in continental European and Asian operations as English becomes the lingua franca of global supply chains.
