Brown leaf is a discoloration of timothy grass that renders otherwise good hay unmarketable or severely discounted. The condition appears as premature browning of leaf tissue, even when harvested at proper boot or early heading stage. Unlike natural curing to golden tan, brown leaf presents as dull, lifeless brown or grey-brown that buyers, especially in the premium horse hay market, recognize as inferior quality at first sight.

The causes are multiple and often overlapping. Fungal diseases, particularly Phyllosticta and Cladosporium species, are common culprits; these leaf spotting fungi thrive in warm, wet springs and can devastate a timothy crop before heading. Rain or heavy dew during the growing season, especially if combined with poor air circulation, accelerates fungal infection. Nutrient deficiency, particularly potassium or magnesium, can also trigger the symptom. Some sources point to weather stress during grain fill or to certain herbicide applications, though this remains variable.

Market impact and prevention

Brown leaf timothy sells at a fraction of the price of bright green or golden hay. Export markets, especially Japan and the Middle East, will reject shipments outright. Domestic horse hay buyers similarly penalize it heavily. Prevention focuses on variety selection (some timothy cultivars show better disease resistance), crop rotation to reduce fungal spore pressure, adequate potassium fertility, and harvest timing that avoids wet conditions. Fungicide applications at boot stage have shown benefit in some regions during high-disease-pressure years, though cost-effectiveness depends on market price and disease risk.

The term "brown leaf" is descriptive and specific to timothy; similar leaf spotting in other grasses goes by different names or is simply called mold or fungal damage. In the seed trade, timothy is tested for brown leaf incidence as part of quality assessment. Growers in high-humidity regions with spring rainfall face the greatest risk, making timothy hay production geographically variable in reliability.
