A tomato cage is a cylindrical or conical framework, typically 4 to 6 feet tall, made of welded wire or rigid plastic that surrounds a tomato plant as it grows. Its primary function is to support the main stem and branches as the plant produces fruit, preventing the weight of ripe tomatoes and foliage from collapsing the plant onto the soil where disease, rot, and pest damage become likely.
Most commercial cages are constructed from 6 to 10 gauge galvanized steel wire welded into a grid pattern, commonly 6 by 6 inches or 8 by 8 inches. The base diameter ranges from 18 to 24 inches. Cones taper toward the top; cylinders maintain uniform width. Plastic alternatives, usually polyethylene or vinyl-coated wire, cost less but degrade under ultraviolet exposure and rarely last more than two or three seasons. Heavy-duty steel cages can be reused for many years if stored properly between seasons.
Installation begins when the plant is young, typically 6 to 12 inches tall, before major branching. The cage is pushed firmly into the soil to anchor it; loose anchoring allows tilting under load. Indeterminate varieties, which grow continuously throughout the season, often require two cages stacked end-to-end or a specialized tall cage reaching 7 feet or more. Determinate varieties, which produce most fruit in a concentrated window, use standard-height cages.
Failure points and alternatives
Cages fail when the base isn't driven deep enough into compacted soil, when plants are planted outside rather than inside the cage (common mistake), or when the grid spacing is too wide to adequately support branch weight. Some growers abandon cages entirely in favor of string trellising or stake systems, which allow better air circulation and harvesting access, particularly in high-humidity climates where fungal disease is severe.
The name is straightforward: the structure forms a cage, and tomato plants live inside it. In regions with short growing seasons, gardeners sometimes use larger spiral cages or Florida weave systems (horizontal cordage tied around stakes) to extend support as plants grow taller. Commercial operations rarely use cages, preferring trellised or pruned systems that maximize density and mechanize harvest; cages dominate small-scale and home gardens.
