Filth is the presence of weeds and undesirable plants colonizing pasture land, choking out the nutritious grasses and legumes that livestock depend on. The term is dated but remains in use among older farmers and in regional agricultural writing. In practical terms, filth reduces both the quantity and quality of forage available to grazing animals, forcing stock to work harder to find palatable feed and often reducing milk yield, weight gain, or wool quality as a result.

The specific plants that constitute filth vary by region and soil type. Common culprits include docks, thistles, ragwort, nettles, and various coarse or toxic species that cattle and sheep will avoid or that actively poison livestock. Dense infestations of bracken or gorse are particularly damaging because they occupy space that would otherwise be productive sward, and some species like ragwort accumulate in dried hay where they become more dangerous. The distinction between filth and merely poor pasture management is partly subjective, but when unwanted plants occupy more than about 10-15 percent of the sward, productivity and animal health begin to suffer noticeably.

Filth arises from several sources: neglected pasture maintenance, overgrazing that weakens desirable species, poor drainage that favors rushes and sedges, or simple seed contamination from neighboring rough ground. Once established, many weeds are difficult to remove because their root systems are deeper or more persistent than grass roots, and they spread by seed or vegetative reproduction faster than grazing animals can consume them. Trampling and selective browsing by stock often worsen the problem by damaging good grass while leaving unpalatable weeds untouched.

Management and remedies

Traditional removal relied on hand-digging (especially docks and thistles), topping with a scythe or mechanical cutter to prevent seeding, and pasture rotation to allow recovery of weakened sward. Chemical herbicides offered faster control from the mid-twentieth century onward, though selective spray is required to kill weeds without harming grass. More recently, improved grazing management, over-seeding with vigorous grass varieties, and soil fertility correction have reduced filth in well-run operations.

The term belongs to an earlier vocabulary of farm management when pasture quality was described in blunter terms. Modern agricultural advisors tend to speak of weed pressure, sward composition, or botanical diversity, though the problem itself remains unchanged. Filth is not a technical classification but a farmer's word for a visible, economically costly failure of pasture management.
