An oil gallery is a drilled or cast passage within an engine block that distributes pressurized oil from the pump to critical bearing surfaces and other lubrication points. The gallery system forms the main arterial network of the engine's forced lubrication circuit, carrying oil under pressure (typically 40 to 80 pounds per square inch in most automotive engines) to places that splash lubrication alone cannot reach reliably.

The main oil gallery runs lengthwise through the engine block, fed directly from the oil pump discharge. Branch galleries split off to feed individual main bearings, connecting rod journals, camshaft bearings, and hydraulic valve lifters or cam followers. The passages are sized to balance flow rate against pressure drop; undersized galleries starve bearing clearances, while oversized galleries bleed off pressure needed elsewhere. Typical gallery diameters in small-block gasoline engines range from 0.250 to 0.375 inches, though large diesel engines may use galleries over 0.5 inches in diameter.

Oil galleries are cast into the block during initial manufacture, though some engines also use drilled cross-holes as secondary paths. The casting method is economical for mass production but makes gallery routing less flexible than pure drilling; performance engine builders sometimes rifle-drill new galleries to improve flow to underfed bearings. All galleries must be plugged and sealed at their dead ends using brass or steel gallery plugs, which are a common source of seepage if installed incorrectly or if corrosion deposits break the seal.

Common failure modes and inspection

Blocked galleries are a primary cause of bearing failure, especially in high-mileage engines or those run with neglected oil changes. Sludge accumulation, corrosion products, and debris restrict flow, causing partial or complete starvation of main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and camshaft journals. Oil analysis and bearing wear patterns are the usual diagnostic tools; disassembly is required to confirm blockage. Gallery plugs that weep oil or fail entirely can indicate corrosion, improper installation, or thermal cycling damage.

The term gallery comes from architecture, where a gallery is a long, narrow passage or corridor. Engine designers borrowed the metaphor for these oil-carrying channels because of their elongated, passage-like character running through the engine block. Modern engine development uses computational fluid dynamics to optimize gallery geometry, balancing the need for adequate flow to each bearing against parasitic losses and heat generation in the pressurized system.
