A large structure for the storage of grain. It is more specialized than a regular granary in that it uses an elevating mechanism to hold the grain in one of many different bins, and that it is designed to fill large trucks and train cars for shipping grain in bulk.

A grain elevator is a tall storage facility fitted with a continuous conveyor or chain mechanism that lifts grain from ground level into overhead bins, then dispenses it into trucks or rail cars at speed. The structure consists of a steel or concrete tower housing multiple storage bins, an electric motor-driven leg (the lifting mechanism itself), a horizontal conveyor at the base, and spouts or chutes for discharge. A typical facility might hold 500,000 to 2,000,000 bushels across a dozen or more bins, each bin serving a different grain type or grade.

The elevator leg is the defining component. Grain flows onto a horizontal belt at the bottom, then into a vertical bucket conveyor (or auger in some designs) that carries it upward at rates of 100 to 300 bushels per minute. At the top, an automatic distribution system directs the grain into the correct bin. The bins themselves are cylindrical steel structures, typically 18 to 36 feet in diameter and 40 to 80 feet tall, fitted with aeration fans to prevent mold and spoilage. Modern elevators include moisture sensors, temperature probes, and level indicators in each bin.

Operations vary by facility type and location. Country elevators, sited near farms, receive grain directly from combines and accumulate it for sale to larger terminals. Terminal elevators, near ports or rail hubs, handle throughput volumes of 5,000 to 10,000 bushels per hour and operate continuously during harvest and shipping seasons. Operator tasks include monitoring bin levels, adjusting leg speed, managing inflow from trucks or hoppers, and testing grain moisture and quality before storage.

Common problems and hazards

Grain can bridge or rat hole within bins, creating voids that prevent proper flow during discharge. Moisture ingress causes spoilage; inadequate aeration allows hot spots and mold colonies to develop, especially in corn stored above 15 percent moisture. The leg mechanism is prone to jam if foreign material (stones, metal) enters the bucket line; many elevators use magnets and screens to prevent this. The name elevator derives from the lifting action of the leg, which is fundamentally a grain conveyor that elevates, not a gravity-fed structure.

Safety is critical. Grain stored under pressure can flow violently when a bin is opened or a valve is breached; workers entering bins risk engulfment and asphyxiation. Dust explosions are a major hazard in enclosed spaces where grain dust concentration reaches flammable levels. Facilities must maintain explosion-proof electrical equipment, dust collection systems, and emergency ventilation. The elevator leg itself presents entanglement and crushing hazards if guards are absent or bypassed.
