A harpoon fork is a mechanical lifting device designed to grab and hold loose hay so it can be hoisted from a wagon or stack by rope pulled through a fixed pulley. The tool consists of a flat steel bar, typically 3 to 4 feet long, with a pair of hinged barbs or claws at the working end and an eye loop at the opposite end for rope attachment. When empty, the barbs hang straight down along the bar; when the rope pulls upward, the barbs swing open like the jaws of a grapple, dig into the hay mass, and lock closed as the load rises, gripping the hay securely enough for a horse or team to haul it up into a barn loft or stack.

The device exploits a simple mechanical principle: as vertical tension increases on the rope, the geometry of the hinged barbs forces them tighter against the hay, creating a self-locking grip. The barbs are typically spring-loaded or weighted so they open again when the load is lowered or the rope goes slack, allowing the hay to drop back onto the wagon or stack. Different designs vary the length and curve of the barbs, the spring tension, and the thickness of the bar itself, depending on whether the tool is meant for lightweight loose hay or heavier, more tightly baled material.

Harpoon forks became standard equipment in American and European farming operations from the mid-1800s onward, particularly where hay had to be moved vertically into storage. They replaced much of the dangerous, back-breaking work of pitching hay by hand, though they required a hayloft pulley system and a source of pulling power, such as a team of horses, a hand crank, or later a small engine. The tool works best on truly loose hay; if the hay is too densely packed or damp, the barbs may slip or the hay may tear rather than lift cleanly.

Common problems and limits

Wear and rust on the hinges and barbs gradually reduce the tool's grip and cause the barbs to stick open or closed. Hay that is wet or moldy loses structural integrity and tends to shred under the barbs rather than hold together as one load. Overloading, where a handler tries to grab too large a mass of hay, can bend the bar, jam the hinges, or cause the rope to snap. The barbs also pose a pinching hazard to hands and fingers during loading and unloading.

Though the device is now largely obsolete in commercial agriculture, replaced by balers and mechanical loaders, harpoon forks are still found in heritage farming operations, museum collections, and small-scale or organic farms that handle loose hay. The design has remained virtually unchanged since the 1880s because the basic physics of the hinged-barb grip is so reliable and simple. The term "harpoon" comes directly from the resemblance of the opening and closing barbs to the barbed head of a harpoon used in whaling.
