Engine ingestion occurs when debris, liquids, birds, or other material enters a turbine engine through the inlet. The jet intake creates a powerful suction effect during engine operation, drawing in whatever lies in its path. This is distinct from surface damage or contamination; ingestion means the foreign object or substance has crossed the inlet threshold and entered the engine core itself.
The most common ingestibles are ice crystals, hail, and rain. Water ingestion alone rarely causes catastrophic failure in modern engines, but it accelerates corrosion and can trigger compressor surge if the volume is sudden and large. FOD, or foreign object damage, covers the broader category: sand particles (especially problematic in desert operations), runway debris, maintenance hardware left inside ducts, and organic material from wildlife. A single bolt or bolt fragment can trigger compressor blade fracture. Bird strikes represent a specialized case; larger birds can cause immediate flameout by blocking airflow or damaging compressor blades directly.
Detection and Response
Engine instrumentation detects ingestion through abnormal vibration, temperature rise in specific compressor stages, or sudden pressure loss across the inlet. Borescope inspection after suspected ingestion allows technicians to photograph blade damage and retrieve loose debris. Engines that have ingested hard objects typically require teardown inspection and replacement of affected compressor stages. The cost and downtime make prevention the dominant practice: intake screens, filter maintenance, proper runway sweeps, and FOD walks before flight operations.
Aircraft design includes inlet particle separator systems on some helicopters and military transport aircraft operating in austere environments. These use centrifugal force to separate sand and dust from engine intake air, venting the material overboard rather than into the engine. Commercial turbofan engines rely on inlet design itself, with carefully shaped ducts that minimize local flow velocities where debris might collect.
The term carries practical weight in maintenance reports and engine manufacturer service bulletins. An engine teardown coded as "post-ingestion inspection" implies non-routine labor, parts replacement, and possible engine condition assessment. Airlines and operators track ingestion incidents by type and environment to refine FOD prevention programs and schedule preventive overhauls.
