exposure: how much weather a field really gets
Exposure is the degree to which a site receives direct sunlight, wind movement, and precipitation without natural or artificial shelter. In agricultural terms, it is a measurable property of land that fundamentally shapes what can be grown there and how equipment must be operated. A field with high southern exposure in the northern hemisphere receives more solar radiation and dries faster after rain; a sheltered valley with low exposure stays cooler and retains moisture longer. The exposure of a site drives decisions about crop selection, drainage design, and when field work can safely proceed.
Wind exposure is particularly critical for machinery operation and crop health. Fields on ridgelines or open plains experience sustained wind that increases evaporation rates, complicates spraying operations (drift becomes severe above 10 to 12 miles per hour for most pesticide and herbicide applications), and can lodge standing grain or topple young transplants. Sheltered sites allow spraying in calmer conditions but may develop frost pockets that damage frost-sensitive crops. Equipment operators must factor wind exposure into scheduling: tillage, seeding, and chemical application are often impossible or ineffective in exposed locations during windy periods.
Solar exposure directly affects soil temperature and water retention. A north-facing slope or shaded field warms slowly in spring, delaying planting and increasing waterlogging risk because evaporation remains low. South-facing slopes dry faster and warm earlier, allowing earlier fieldwork but requiring more careful irrigation management in dry seasons. Soil moisture sensors and drainage tile placement must account for these differences, as exposed sites may need different drain spacing than sheltered ones. A high-exposure sandy loam will shed water rapidly, while the same soil in a sheltered site may require subsurface drainage to prevent anaerobic conditions.
Exposure is not static across a farm. Windbreaks, hedgerows, and tree lines reduce wind exposure for downwind fields, sometimes extending the workable season by several days. Removal of these features increases exposure and changes microclimate conditions, often unfavorably. Conversely, shelter belts planted to reduce exposure may take 10 to 15 years to establish effective wind protection. Equipment for assessing exposure includes anemometers for wind speed measurement, soil thermometers for temperature tracking, and simple visual assessment of vegetation health and stand lodging patterns that indicate chronic wind stress.
The term 'exposure' itself comes from the verb 'to expose,' meaning to lay open or subject to conditions. In agricultural dialect, a field with 'good exposure' typically means abundant sunlight and adequate air movement for crop health; 'poor exposure' often implies excessive wind or shade. Understanding site exposure is foundational to sustainable field layout, equipment selection, and realistic yield expectations. It shapes maintenance needs, too: exposed sites with high wind see accelerated wear on machinery seals and bearings due to dust infiltration, requiring more frequent filter changes and lubrication schedules.
