A honey plant is any flowering plant whose nectar, pollen, or both are regularly harvested by foraging bees. These plants are the direct feedstock of beekeeping, determining both the quantity and character of surplus honey a colony can produce. Without reliable honey plants in bloom across the active season, a hive cannot build reserves or be managed profitably.

Different regions have different primary honey plants. In North America, alfalfa, clover, wildflowers, and basswood are major contributors; in Mediterranean climates, thyme and lavender; in tropical zones, kapok and various Eucalyptus species. The botanical composition of a honey crop directly influences its flavor, color, and crystallization rate, allowing beekeepers to market single-source honeys (alfalfa, orange blossom, buckwheat) based on the dominant nectar source.

Nectar flow depends on bloom timing and weather. A heavy spring rainfall or unexpected frost can disrupt flowering and leave a colony short of resources at a critical moment. Commercial beekeepers in managed landscapes often rely on a sequence of honey plants staggered through the season, or move hives to follow peak bloom in different regions, a practice called migratory beekeeping. Home and sideliner beekeepers assess their local flora and may plant supplementary nectar sources (borage, phacelia, or buckwheat cover crops) to fill gaps.

Pollen vs. nectar sources

Nectar plants provide the carbohydrate base for honey; pollen plants supply protein and micronutrients essential for brood rearing and hive health. Some plants, like clover and sunflower, offer both. Others, such as pine trees, are purely pollen sources and yield no nectar, yet are still managed as honey plants because colonies cannot thrive without the protein. A shortage of pollen in early spring can limit a colony's ability to expand in advance of the main nectar flow.

Agronomic practices affect honey plant availability. Intensive monoculture, heavy herbicide use, and loss of hedgerows and field margins reduce wild honey plant diversity and can stress colonies. Conversely, organic farms, permaculture systems, and conservation plantings support bee nutrition. Some jurisdictions now mandate retention of flowering margins or restrict mowing during bloom to protect honey plants and the foraging habitat bees depend on.
