A trainagraph is a mechanical or electronic device mounted on a train that continuously records air pressure and brake application data throughout a journey. It functions as a diagnostic tool, capturing what happens inside the pneumatic braking system so engineers can analyze performance, troubleshoot failures, and investigate incidents after they occur.
The instrument records two primary signals: the main reservoir pressure (typically 80 to 90 psi in freight operations) and the brake pipe pressure, which drops when the driver applies brakes. A stylus or digital sensor marks these pressure fluctuations onto a paper chart or data file that rolls past at a constant speed, creating a continuous graph. On paper-based units, the chart speed is usually around 20 mm per minute, allowing several hours of operation on a single roll before manual replacement is needed.
Trainagraphs reveal whether brakes are responding correctly to driver input, whether pressure is holding steady during coasting, and whether leaks or valve faults are developing. A sudden pressure drop where none was commanded, or a slow decline during level running, indicates a leak in the main line or brake system. Conversely, sluggish pressure response to brake application points to valve stiction or restricted air passages. This data is invaluable in diagnosing intermittent faults that are difficult to reproduce during routine maintenance.
Use in investigation and regulation
Following a brake failure or derailment, the trainagraph chart is often one of the first pieces of evidence examined. It shows objectively whether the braking system was working as it should at the moment of the incident, removing guesswork from root cause analysis. Many railways and regulatory bodies require trainagraphs on freight trains, particularly those carrying hazardous loads, and on passenger services where brake reliability is critical. Some jurisdictions mandate that charts be retained for a fixed period before disposal.
The term itself reflects the instrument's dual nature: the word combines "train" with the Greek root "graph," meaning to write or record. Modern trainagraphs increasingly use solid-state data loggers that record to flash memory or transmit data wirelessly, eliminating paper rolls but serving the same purpose. Whether mechanical or digital, the trainagraph remains a standard tool in fleet maintenance programs and accident investigation, providing an objective record that the brakes alone cannot.
