A trough is a linear channel, typically fabricated from metal, concrete, or plastic, that moves water, milk, or other farm liquids downhill by gravity alone. The cross-section is either U-shaped or V-shaped, with the U profile holding larger volumes and the V profile shedding debris more readily. Troughs are passive infrastructure: no pumps, no moving parts, just geometry and slope.
In dairy operations, milk troughs carry product from parlour to vat room or tanker. These are usually stainless steel, sloped at 1:40 to 1:50 gradient, and fitted with strainers at inlet and sediment traps at low points. They must be self-draining to prevent bacterial growth. In irrigation, concrete or lined earth troughs run from headwater to field, often open to air; these are sized by flow rate (litres per second) and gradient. Metal troughs in livestock housing deliver water to drinkers and can be flushed by valve.
The depth and width of a trough are determined by volume-per-minute and gradient. A shallow trough on steep ground moves liquid fast; a deep trough on gentle slope holds more but risks stagnation. Dairy milk troughs are typically 50 to 100 mm deep and 75 to 150 mm wide. Irrigation troughs are often 300 to 600 mm deep, depending on field size and water source. Minimum gradient is about 0.5 degrees (1:100) to maintain flow; steeper slopes reduce sediment deposit.
Faults emerge from poor gradient, blockage by debris or scale, and corrosion at welds or seams. In cold climates, troughs freeze solid unless insulated or drained. Milk troughs that sit too level accumulate lacto-bacterial film. Metal troughs rust if left wet and unlined; concrete cracks under freeze-thaw or root pressure. Cleaning is labour-intensive because the entire run must be accessible and flushed, and low-lying sections catch silt.
The term 'trough' derives from Old English, originally any hollow wooden vessel. In modern trade it means any open-channel conductor, and sits between small-diameter pipe (pressurised, rigid) and large open canal (unlined, slow, for distance). Troughs bridge the gap: they are cheap, low-pressure, easy to clean, and fail gracefully. On small farms they are often improvised from guttering or split pipe; on large operations they are engineered to specification with fall, material choice, and drain points marked on plans.
