tympan

A piece of cloth padding placed under the platen of a letterpress to distribute the pressure on the sheet being printed.

underlay

A piece of paper pasted under woodcuts, stereotype plates, etc. in a form, to bring them up to the necessary level for printing.

underprint

The addition of colour under black areas to produce a deeper black and prevent oversaturation of the paper.

union bug

A maker’s mark imprinted on a work to show that it is sanctioned by members of a trade union. It is often a tiny elongated rhomboid containing and surrounded by, in minuscule typeface, identifying names and the union’s local chapter number.

verso

The left-hand page of a book of a script which reads from left to right, usually having an even page number.

vignette

A decorative design, originally representing vine branches or tendrils, at the head of a chapter, of a manuscript or printed book, or in a similar position.

waver

In full waver roller: a roller which places ink on the inking table of a printing press with a back and forth, waving motion.

web

A long sheet of paper which is fed from a roll into a printing press, as opposed to individual sheets of paper.

whiskering

A defect of gravure printing characterized by printed areas possessing hairlike tendrils of ink sticking out into non-image areas.
