accident

A collision or crash of a vehicle, aircraft, or other form of transportation that causes damage to the transportation involved; and sometimes injury or death to the transportation's occupants or bystanders in close proximity. (but see Usage notes)

ADR

The Agreement of 30 September 1957 concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road; formerly the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.

air ride

The smooth ride in a vehicle resulting from an active pneumatic suspension system, instead of springs or a hydraulic system.

all-terrain vehicle

Any of a class of motorized vehicles, smaller than cars and trucks but large enough for one or several passengers and some light cargo, that is designed to operate on rough ground, and is not necessarily street-legal; either an astride-seated quad or tri-wheeled off-road recreational vehicle.

ATP

The Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs and on the Special Equipment to be used for such Carriage (ATP).

bakkie

A small pick-up truck or ute, generally open and sometimes fitted with a removable canopy, but distinct from an enclosed van and a large truck.

BTT

Initialism of Basic Theory Test, a computerised knowledge test on the Singapore road rules held at a driving center.

bucket shop

A travel agency selling discounted airfares, usually in defiance of existing minimum fare arrangements. Now usually refers to any small cheap agency.

bull dust

A very fine, powdery red dust prevalent in arid outback regions, which accumulates in potholes or on unsealed roads, creating a deceptive, flat appearance before vehicles sink into it.

bus replacement service

A special bus service which replaces a train service when engineering work is carried out, or when the train service is temporarily suspended for other reasons such as flooding, track damage etc.

bus stand

a type of bus stop, usually at the terminus of a route, where a bus can wait between journeys. Buses normally do not pick up passengers there, rather boarding takes place at a designated stop nearby.

car chase

A chase, usually high-speed, between people in two or more cars or other vehicles, normally between the police or other law enforcement and an offender.

CASM

Acronym of cost per available seat-mile, a method of calculating operating costs in the travel industry, derived by dividing total operating expenses by total ASMs.

commuter

Normally a short form of commuter rail, commuter train or commuter bus; A transport system or a vehicle in such systems used to transport commuters (#2)

elephant race

A situation in which one truck tries to overtake another at a slightly higher speed, blocking the road for passenger car drivers behind.
