Application Specific Integrated Circuit, ein integrierter Schaltkreis, der dazu entworfen ist, eine bestimmte Funktion sehr schnell auszuführen.

In networking hardware such as switches: a hardware chip that determines what port to forward data to. An ASIC can forward packets at line speed because it works only on that single task.
