In a wooden frame: the projection or shoulder around, or at the side of, a tenon (“projecting member made to insert into a mortise”), used to strengthen a mortise-and-tenon joint.
Warum dieses Wort
Timber framers watch it because the relish is the short grain that resists the peg tearing out toward the end of the tenon; too little and the joint fails at the pin hole rather than at the shoulder.
