parting sand
Dry, non-adhesive sand sprinkled upon the partings of a mould to facilitate the separation by not allowing the mould to stick together.
Warum dieses Wort
Green sand sticks to itself because the clay binder is doing its job; parting sand is the same mineral with the bond left out, so the joint face is the one place in the mould that will not bond. Too heavy a dusting and you get sand inclusions along the seam.
In use
Go light on the parting sand along that joint, last one you did left grit all down the seam of the casting.
