To spread the end of a pipe outward so as to form a wide thin flange.
Warum dieses Wort
A lead-worker's word from the days of soil pipe wiped by hand: the flange is made from the pipe itself, not added to it. The same idea survives in flaring a copper tube for a compression joint.

Old boy on that job could taft a lead end flat and true with a turnpin faster than I can cut a thread.
