A part of a mine or quarry where ore is to be, or has been, excavated by an artificial flow of water.
Warum dieses Wort
A Roman-era method that left its mark on the landscape long before it left one in the language: dammed water released down a hillside stripped soil and loose rock to expose the ore beneath. The scars are still readable in old lead and tin districts.
In use
That whole gully above the old shaft is a hush, not a natural stream bed, so don't read the slope as undisturbed ground.
