A pattern, characterised by diagonal ridges, created by the regular interlacing of threads of the warp and weft during weaving.
Warum dieses Wort
The diagonal comes from shifting the crossing point one thread each row, so the cloth has fewer interlacings than a plain weave: it drapes better and hides soiling, which is why denim, drill and gabardine all sit in this family. The same 2x2 pattern shows up in carbon fibre cloth, where it lets the fabric wrap a curve without wrinkling.
In use
Run your thumb across it, you can feel the twill going up to the right, so that roll is face side out.
