buffer stop
a device installed at the end of a railway line or siding, which is intended to stop trains and other rail vehicles going any further.
Warum dieses Wort
Named for the buffers it meets: the sprung pads on the ends of older rolling stock. Some types are fixed and simply absorb the hit, others are friction stops designed to slide along the rail and spread the stop over a longer distance.
In use
Shunt her in slow, there's a buffer stop about two lengths past the points and no room to play with.
