V engine

An internal combustion engine configuration consisting of two cylinder banks, usually with the same number of cylinders in each bank, connected to a common crankshaft, and arranged at an angle to each other so as to form a V shape when viewed from the front of the engine.

V16

An internal combustion engine with sixteen cylinders in two banks of eight in a V-shaped formation.

V2I

Abbreviation of vehicle-to-infrastructure technology.

V2V

Abbreviation of vehicle-to-vehicle technology.

V4

An internal combustion engine with four cylinders in two banks of two in a V-shaped formation.

vacuum brake

A brake used on trains, working on the principle of keeping up a vacuum in a continuous pipe or pipes extending under the train, and in brake-cylinders connected to them under each vehicle, the air being sucked out by ejectors or pumps on the locomotive.

vacuum tube

A type of electron tube that controls electron current through vacuum between electrodes within a sealed container, usually of glass or metal and often designed to be easily installed in and removed from the equipment in which it is used.

valley board

A timber board supporting a metal valley iron or undertile gutter where two sections of a pitched roof meet.

valley rafter

A diagonal support that runs from the wall plate to the ridge of a roof, providing structural stability where the two roof slopes meet.

valve gear

The mechanism of a steam engine that operates the inlet and exhaust valves to admit steam into the cylinder and allow exhaust steam to escape, respectively, at the correct points in the cycle.

Vandyke collar

A wide, ornate collar made of lace and linen, featuring deeply indented edges formed into scallops or sharp V-shaped points.

vapor lock

A problem mostly affecting gasoline-fueled internal combustion engines, where the liquid fuel changes state from liquid to gas while still in the fuel delivery system, reducing the pump pressure and causing transient power loss or complete stalling.

variable valve timing

The process of altering the timing of a valve lift event in an internal combustion engine, and is often used to improve performance, fuel economy or emissions.

Varignon's theorem

A theorem stating that the torque of a resultant of two concurrent forces about any point is equal to the algebraic sum of the torques of its components about the same point.

ventipane

A small, pivoting or fixed glass panel set into the front corner of a vehicle's side window, designed to provide ventilation by directing airflow into the passenger compartment.

vertical alignment

A style of liquid crystal display (LCD) that is naturally stored in an upright vertical position, producing a black image until an electrical current is introduced.

vertical deflection

A measure of how far the direction of the local gravity field has been shifted at a certain point on the Earth by local anomalies such as nearby mountains.

via

An electrical connection which connects two or more layers on a printed circuit board or an integrated circuit.

virial

One-half of the product of the stress of attraction or repulsion with the distance between two particles.

voice coil

A coil of wire attached to the apex of the cone of a loudspeaker that provides the motive force to the cone by the reaction of a magnetic field to the current passing through it.

voice over IP

Voice over Internet Protocol (also "VoIP"), a telecommunications system that uses the Internet or other Internet Protocol network to transmit telephone calls.
