transformer

A static device that transfers electric energy from one circuit to another by magnetic coupling; primarily used to transfer energy between different voltage levels, which allows the most appropriate voltages for power generation, transmission and distribution to be chosen separately.

transition

A published procedure for instrument flight, coming between the departure and en-route phases of flight, or between en-route flight and an approach/landing procedure.

transition time

The amount of time required for the switch output to settle within a given percentage of the final value following a change in the control input level.

trapper

A worker (usually a child) who opens and shuts a door in a gallery or level of a mine, to manage ventilation and access.

trash

The disused stems, leaves, or vines of a crop, sometimes mixed with weeds, which will either be plowed in as green manure or be removed by raking, grazing, or burning.

travelling-wave tube

A type of vacuum tube which amplifies electromagnetic signals, where the electron gun fires down the tube with an unmodulated electron beam, that passes through an interaction array, where the EM-signal is fed, which interacts with the electron beam, bunching the electrons, and transferring power to the signal.

traverse table

A table by means of which the difference of latitude and departure corresponding to any given course and distance may be found by inspection. It contains the lengths of the two sides of a right-angled triangle, usually for every quarter of a degree of angle, and for lengths of the hypotenuse, from 1 to 100.

travois

A sled dragged by a horse or ox to transport logs, with one end of each log on the sled and the other end touching the ground.

tread

A walking surface in a stairway on which the foot is placed.

treadwear

A numerical measure of how long the tread of a tire can be expected to last.

tree cookie

A preserved horizontal cross-section of a tree trunk or limb, often demonstrating the physical structure and growth rings of the source plant.

tree-and-branch

Of cable television and similar networks: consisting of a main central cable with a separate cable branching off it to each subscriber.

trellis

A kind of graph, used in communication theory and encryption, whose nodes are ordered into vertical slices by time, with each node at each time connected to at least one node at an earlier and at least one node at a later time.

trepan

To create a large hole by making a narrow groove outlining the shape of the hole and then removing the plug of material remaining by less expensive means.

tret

An allowance to purchasers, for waste or refuse matter, of four pounds on every 104 pounds of suttle weight, or weight after the tare is deducted.

tri-mode

Of a train or locomotive: Designed to operate on electricity on electrified lines, or diesel-electric power (from a diesel generator) or battery power on non-electrified lines.

triac

A three-terminal electronic component that conducts current in either direction when triggered; a bidirectional triode thyristor.

trial

An occasion on which a person or thing is tested to find out how well they perform or how suitable they are.

trial balloon

A small balloon released into the sky to determine the direction and tendency of winds in the upper air before a manned ascent in a larger balloon; a ballon d'essai.

triangulation

A technique in which distances and directions are estimated from an accurately measured baseline and the principles of trigonometry; (countable) an instance of the use of this technique.

tribar

The arrangement of the signature stacked lights on a Ford Mustang.

Triger process

A method of sinking through water-bearing ground, in which the shaft is lined with tubbing and provided with an airlock, work being proceeded with under air pressure.

trimmer

A device for storing coal in gradually increasing piles made by building up at the point of the cone or top of the prism.

triode

A thermionic valve containing an anode, a cathode, and a control grid; small changes to the charge on the grid control the flow from cathode to anode, which makes amplification possible.

trip computer

A device fitted in some vehicles that records, calculates, and displays various trip-related information to the driver.

trip log

A detailed record or documentation of all trips taken by a vehicle.

trip meter

A part of an odometer capable of recording the distance traveled during a short trip by allowing its readout to be reset to zero.
