stadia

A level staff or graduated rod used by surveyors to measure differences in level, or to measure horizontal distances by sighting the stadia hairs (graduations) through a telescope.

stadia hair

In a theodolite, etc., one of the horizontal crosshairs equidistant from the central horizontal crosshair.

stadium

A graduated rod used to measure the distance of the place where it stands from an instrument having a telescope, by observing the number of the graduations of the rod that are seen between certain parallel wires (stadia wires) in the field of view of the telescope.

staff

A mixture of plaster and fibre used as a temporary exterior wall covering.

stagger

The horizontal positioning of a biplane, triplane, or multiplane's wings in relation to one another.

A body style for cars in which the roof is extended rearward to produce an enclosed area in the position and serving the function of the boot (trunk) of a sedan or saloon.

station-to-station

A method of placing a telephone call in which the calling party will accept the placed call irrespective of respondent. This connection method has largely been superseded by direct dial connections.

stationmaster

The person in charge of a railroad station, usually an employee of a particular railroad by which the station is owned, but sometimes an employee of a separate corporation, such as one owning a station used by two or more railroads.
